Librarian's Choice Search Engines:
  • Google: Great Place to start any search!  (TIP: Use "quotation marks" around phrases).
  • Yahoo: For when you have a general topic in mind. (TIP: Use the Yahoo menu to navigate through the site.)
  • Librarians Index to the Internet: "... is a searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 10,000 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries. Lii.org is used by both librarians and the general public as a reliable and efficient guide to Internet resources."
  • Altavista Advanced: For when you have a specific topic in mind and need a lot of information. (TIP: use "" around phrases and combine words with "AND".)
The "Invisible Web"
The Invisible Web describes information that is generally not found by using a traditional search engines like Google, Yahoo or Altavista.
  • CompletePlanet: Complete Planet is a commercial site powered by BrightPlanet.  It claims to have links to "70, 000 searchable databases and specialty search engines."
